If you’re preparing for endometriosis excision surgery, first of all—bravo! Taking this step is a powerful move toward reclaiming your health and finding relief. As someone who’s been through the journey, I know how overwhelming it can feel to not only prepare for the surgery itself (not knowing how much or how little will be done on the inside!) but also the recovery afterward. The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone.
In this post, I’m sharing the tips I wish I’d known before heading into surgery, as well as the must-have items that made my recovery smoother and more comfortable. From practical prep ideas to the little things that can make a big difference, this guide is here to help you feel empowered and ready for what’s ahead. Let’s dive in and make this experience as stress-free as possible. You’ve got this!
- You’ll want clean and comfy clothes like nightgowns/dresses without waistbands to wear for the days following. Here are a bunch of great nightgown options.
- A blanket or pillow for the seat belt for the ride home. This was an outpatient surgery for me, so I was sent home a few hours later. Even if you spend the night, your belly will still be sore and this helps make the drive home more bearable. You may have something small around the house you can bring, but if not, they have these on Amazon.
- A bag in case you are sick from the anesthesia on the way home
- Slip on shoes to wear home and in the coming days, so you don’t have to bend over. I love to wear this kind.
- Colace – I took this after to help with the effects of the anesthesia.
- Gas-X – this helped with the effects of the gas they fill your belly with to do the laparoscopy
- Throat Lozenges & Mints – these both helped with the sore throat after being intubated
- Water bottle – It’s important to stay hydrated before and after surgery for healing, and this large water bottle with a pop up straw makes it easy to drink while you’re laid up in bed!
- Heating Pad & Ice Pack – depending on your comfort after surgery, you’ll want one or both of these. I loved this heating pad on my back during recovery, and also this one that I could put near my stomach as needed. This ice pack also helps with sore incisions.
- Abdominal Binder – lastly, this abdominal binder was a lifesaver during the recovery process (I didn’t use it the first couple days) but when I was able to be up and out/about, and returned to work, it felt nice to keep my stomach secure and protected.
Endometriosis excision surgery is a big step, and while the journey may feel daunting at times, it’s also one that can lead to tremendous relief and renewed hope. By preparing ahead of time and equipping yourself with the right tools and mindset, you’re setting yourself up for a smoother recovery and a healthier future.
Remember to listen to your body, give yourself plenty of grace, and lean on your support system when you need it. Whether it’s the practical must-haves or the self-care tips shared here, I hope you feel a little more ready to take on this journey.
